Bars in Vienna
Palmenhaus
1, Burggarten/entrance Goethegasse (533 1033). U1, U2, U4 Karlsplatz/tram 1, 2, D, J. Open 10am-2pm daily. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. Expensively renovated palmhouse with a restaurant and bar. In the summer you can sit outside - if you can find a table. Not bad for sipping a variety of Austrian wines at the long bar, amid the smartly turned out; however the building itself is really the star of the show. Look out for the DJ nights, staged from time to time.

Barfly's
6, Esterhazygasse 33 (586 0825/3899). U3 Neubaugasse. Open 6pm-3am Mon-Thur; 6pm-4am Fri, Sat. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. The first of Mario Castillo's expanding bar empire, Barfly's has been around since the early 1990s, attracting a slightly ritzy, moneyed crowd for its smooth r'n'b and decent, though pricey, drinks. Enter through the door to the Fürst Metternich Hotel.

Europa
7, Zollergasse 8 (526 3383). U3 Zieglergasse. Open 9am-5am daily. No credit cards. Attracts a young, club-fashionable crowd day and night. The look is modern and minimalist, with window booths where you can watch girls and boys go by. A breakfast buffet is served at weekends 9am to 2pm (AS110), and there's everything from vegetarian to children's grub to hangover specials. A back room has now been opened for DJ nights, thankfully reducing the often ear-splitting volume in the main room.

Planter's
1, Zelinkagasse 4 (533 3393). U2, U4 Schottenring/tram 1, 2/bus 3a. Open 5pm-4am daily. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. Large airy colonial-style bar with luxurious furnishings and magnificent teak panelling, attracting a similar clientele to the Palmenhaus. Cigars and rum are the attraction here - the whole bar area is decorated with glass cabinets housing hundreds of bottles. There is a small dancefloor where you can groove to Latin sounds of all varieties, but somehow it's just too smart.

Kleines Café
1, Franziskanerplatz 3 (no phone). U1, U3 Stephansplatz. Open 10-2am daily. No credit cards. Owned by Hanno Pöschl, whom you may recognise from appearances in films ranging from the dire (Before Sunrise, 1995) to the legendary (Querelle, 1982). With the latter in mind, don't come here looking for a spot of rough trade, as the toilets aren't big enough to unwrap a condom. As the name suggests, the whole place is tiny, though architect Hermann Czech's design makes great use of the space with mirrors placed à la American Bar, whose restoration he undertook in 1985. The clientele, like some of the staff, are an eccentric mix of arty-intellectual and proto-bohemian types, prone to occasional tantrums. Good small eats and one of Vienna's best summer terraces on the beautiful Franziskanerplatz.

Dino's
1, Salzgries 19 (535 7230). U1, U4 Schwedenplatz/tram 1, 2, 21, N/bus 2a. Open 6pm-3am Mon-Thur; 6pm-4am Fri, Sat; 8pm-3am Sun. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. Dean Martin would have approved. Falter rates Dino's as one of Vienna's top six American Bars - as these plush-quality-booze-serving entities are known from here to Paris. Owner/barman Rene will mix you anything from a Long Island Ice Tea to a Rob Roy (AS80 to AS110). There's a good variety of whiskeys too. The music is jazz and American mainstream.

Flanagan's
1, Schwarzenbergerstraße 1-3 (513 7378). Tram 1, 2, D. Open 1pm-2am Mon-Thur, Sun; 1pm-4am Fri, Sat. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. This spacious pub is said to have stood in Churchtown County Cork before being dismantled and transported to Vienna. Owner Alan Field and his staff are all Irish. There are, of course, Guinness and Kilkenny on tap, but they're expensive (AS63 for a pint); the Austrian beers are reasonably priced. It's expat central and many come for that taste of home - there's fish and chips, egg and bacon butties and Irish stews, occasional quiz nights and big-screen sport entertainment.

American Bar
1, Kärntnerdurchgang (512 3283). U1, U3 Stephansplatz. Open noon-4am daily. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. Designed by Adolf Loos in 1908, it's a tiny bar with pricey drinks. The trompe-l'oeil effect of the mirrors makes it feel bigger and the luxurious atmosphere of its marble and darkwood interior make it a memorable spot to set the evening's activities in motion.

Shultz
7, Siebensterngasse 31/Kirchengasse (522 9120). U3 Neubaugasse/tram 49. Open 9am-2am Mon-Sat; 5pm-2am Sun. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. A spacious bar housed behind plate glass in the ground floor of a splendid Jugendstil building, Shultz is one of the rare breed of Barcelona-style designer boozers in Vienna. Cocktails are the mainstay and the seemingly cloned and highly competent bar staff will assemble a mean Caipirinha, but only serve you small beers. Stefan, the boss, is a bit of a patron of the (modern) arts and large canvases and sculptures are displayed to good effect outside. Music is a listenable blend of cool funk and nu-beats. If the terrace is packed in summer, it's worth moving next door to have a large draught Budweiser at Siebenstern, the stylish boozer belonging to probably Austria's wealthiest political party - the Communists.
