Without a shadow of doubt one of the trendiest clubs in the whole of Asia. Zouk's name has been listed as an essential stopover in most dance mags and it's easy to see why. Top spin-masters like Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Paul Oakenfold and Ken Ishii have graced the DJ console and thousands of dance worshippers throng its hallowed dance floors. There is also the Zouk Wine Bar that's always teeming with the hippiest people in Singapore - media stars, gorgeous air stewardesses and those in the top-league professions. Apart from Zouk, there's the Velvet Underground belting pop and soul, catering to the yuppies and entertainment industry players. Another popular outlet is Phuture, garbed in a metallic-like setting and is positioned as a futuristic dance pad, drawing the younger crowd with its blend of house, drum 'n' bass, and other
branches of dance music. Simply intoxicating.

Velvet Underground
17 Jiak Kim Street (738 2988), Open: Tue-Sat 9pm-3am, Admission: Differs,
Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, Amex

The crowd that hangs out here are very trendy and slightly more mature than the ones who haunt Zouk and Phuture. Velvet is very slick, and with the DJs spinning a good blend of deep house and garage, it's good for hitting the dance floor. Equipped with a chill out room and lots of comfy little seats, this place is also good for lounging around if you don't feel like boogying. It still gets pretty crowded, so you'd better be uncool and get here a bit earlier than everyone else if you want to get a seat. There are two bars though, so it's slightly easier to get a drink. With their red velvet walls, colourful seats and slick bar stools, this place reeks of glamour and style. The party vibe's pretty good and so is the music.

It used to be at Bussorah Street and it was already known as a dance club that clubbers should check out. At this new location at the Gallery Evason Hotel, it is now known as THE club that any clubber in the know must check out. The Liquid Room is accessible only up a dark flight of stairs. Once you enter, you will notice the ventilation fan positioned to the left of the entrance. Yes, this is the same one from the previous venue. Go in and party to tech, tribal and progressive house or techno tunes dished out by Stingray, Kenny, Spencer and big name guest DJs. It may be simple in design and small in area but it constantly packs the crowds and there have been murmurs that this may just be the next Velvet Underground.

One of the best live bars around town - bar none (literally). This bar has a better motley mix of bar crawlers with just the right proportion of suave executives, gorgeous party gals and a minority of congenial expatriates. The live stage is where the bar draws its energy from - who else - Energy featuring the charismatic Douglas Oliveiro. This outfit is perfectly attuned with the crowd without being sycophantic and knows how to whip up the fervour better than any other band. Be it churning numbers ranging from the 70s school rock to the 90s alternative anthems and featuring songs by artistes like Don McLean, Queen, REM and Oasis. When the band retreats backstage, the DJ maintains the electrifying atmosphere with house, garage and dance numbers. Occasionally, even the Bar None staff will hoist themselves atop the dance counter to pull off some slick dance moves. This spot is more than just a bar.

The anchor entertainment joint at the Grand Hyatt, BRIX is essentially a stylish 5-star rated pub, a fabulous Music Bar amalgamating with The Wine And Whiskey Bar, and a baroque-style cellar stockpiling an impressive array of stuff. To create a cottage-warm feel to BRIX, bricks (lots of them) line the walls of the bars. The live acts change every three months and are popular versatile bands, usually belting out familiar Top 40 terrain, soul, jazz and R&B tunes - testament that it is a hit with the audience is the regularly packed dance-floor filled with patrons who sometimes hover close to the performing stage. In line with the esteemed reputation of the Grand Hyatt, the typical crowd consists of mainly globe-trotting executives, local youthful lasses and smartly-dressed fun seekers. As for the Wine Bar, you get to lounge and while the time away as you intake on French champagnes & fine wines from all the traditional wine regions. Alternatively, if a stronger drink is what you seek, there is a vast range of whiskeys, bourbons and malts from traditional powerhouse Scotland and U.S. regions like Tennessee and Kentucky. To round it off, a fine selection of Havana's best for cigar buffs.
