Rome's prime posing spot the cool and for the wanna-be's. The ivy-clad location is as beautiful as prices are horrific. A must for first-time visitors to the Eternal City looking for old-style Roman glamour. Bar del Fico Piazza del Fico, 26-28 (06 686 5205) Bus to Corso del Rinascimento or Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Open 9am-2am Mon-Sat; noon-2am Sun. Round the corner from Bar della Pace, the Fico has come into its own recently, hiking prices accordingly and attracting a very cool crowd. Nice fig tree. La Base Via Cavour, 274 (06 474 0659) Metro Cavour/bus to Via Cavour. Open 8pm-5am daily. Combined bar and pizzeria that stays open all night, frequented into the small hours by hungry clubbers and transvestites. Selarum Via dei Fienaroli, 12 (06 581 9130) Bus to Piazza Sonnino. Open June-Sept 9pm-2am daily Bamboo seats and blue lighting create a laid-back atmosphere in Selarum's leafy courtyard. Serves cocktails and food (lunch 11am-3pm daily) and often has live music. Prices on the high side. Sant'Eustachio Piazza Sant'Eustachio, 82 (06 686 1309) Bus to Corso del Rinascimento. Open 8.30am-1am Tue-Sun. The most famous coffee bar in the city, with walls plastered with celebrity testimonials. The coffee is quite extraordinary - if very expensive. The espresso comes frothed up: the schiuma (froth) can be slurped out afterwards with spoon or fingers. Unless you specify caffè amaro, it comes heavily sugared.
