Flashy Eurotrash types sip Champagne and jostle for air-kissing space at this bar where money talks and waiters snarl. This used to be the 'in' spot for the likes of Naomi Campbell, but it's still good. Beautiful people eat sushi; businessmen and their women sip cocktails. Barrio Latino 46-48 rue du Fbg-St-Antoine, 12th (01.55.78.84.75) Mº Bastille. Open 10am-2am daily. Credit AmEx, MC, V. News event of the 1999 rentrée, this 900-seater extravaganza is owned by the team which runs the waningly cool Buddha Bar and Barfly. The menu runs to fashion food like salmon tartare and carpaccio. Drinks are sparing, but the neo-Cuban décor, on three dimly lit floors around a central atrium, is rather wonderful. China Club 50 rue de Charenton, 12th (01.43.43.82.02) Mº Ledru-Rollin or Bastille. Open 7pm-2am Mon-Thur, Sun; 7pm-3am Fri, Sat. Closed Mon, Sun July 15-Aug 15. Credit AmEx, V. Wheelchair access. This sophisticated haven, decorated to resemble a Hong Kong gentleman's club, boasts a speakeasy-style cellar bar (live jazz Fri and Sat), a lacquered fumoir chinois and a mile-long main bar. Great cocktails, and good, but pricey, Chinese-inspired food. La Closerie des Lilas 171 bd du Montparnasse, 6th (01.40.51.34.50) Mº Vavin/RER Port-Royal. Open 11.30am-1am daily. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V. Founded as a lilac-shaded guinguette dance hall in 1847, this bar's famous clients have included Man Ray, Apollinaire, Picasso and Hemingway, as little brass plaques on the tables testify. Now a classy cocktail bar with a piano tinkling in the background, it still attracts the political and cultural establishment. The restaurant has been reinvigorated by a new chef. La Fourmi 74 rue des Martyrs, 18th (01.42.64.70.35) Mº Pigalle. Open 8.30am-2am Mon-Sat; 10am-2am Sun. Credit AmEx, MC, V. Industrial lighting, a long bar and a Duchampian bottle rack hanging from the ceiling form the décor of this Pigalle bar. Rich Parisian youth and local trend-setters dine on salads, sandwiches and a plat du jour. Sanz Sans 49 rue du Fbg-St-Antoine, 11th (01.44.75.78.78.) Mº Bastille. Open 9am-2am daily. Credit MC, V. Here's a destroy-chic-style bar that's packed with sexy party people getting ripped on cocktails and dancing on tables, while bar staff thrash cymbal light fittings in time to the hip-hop hits. Don't bother eating in the mediocre upstairs restaurant. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
