Lot 61 (Global's Favorite!) 550 W 21st St at Eleventh Aves (212-243-6555) Subway: A, C, E to 23rd St. Mon-Sat 6pm-4am; Fri-Sat 6pm-3:30am. AmEx, MC, V.Late night menu served until 3am Mon-Thur; 3.30am Fri, Sat. Feeding off West Chelsea's thriving art scene and a lot celebrities, this former truck garage attracts an art gallery-type clientele - and it looks like a gallery, right down to its collection of commissioned works by big-name artists. Sliding scrims and funky furniture give depth to the warehouse-size space, while an extensive menu gives you something to talk about besides last night's opening. But be warned: Tons of "private parties" can make it difficult to get in. Temple Bar 332 Lafayette St between Bleecker and Houston Sts (212-925-4242) Subway: 6 to Bleecker St. Mon-Thu 5pm-1am; Fri, Sat 5pm-2am; Sun 7pm-1am. AmEx, DC, MC, V. Temple's bartenders are dedicated masters of their trade, and the decor is sophisticated and opulent, lending an otherworldly air to what could become a long, dark night of expensive drinking. Bubble Lounge 228 West Broadway between Franklin and White Sts (212-431-3433) Subway: 1, 9 to Franklin St; A, C, E to Canal St. Mon-Thu 5:30pm4am; Fri, Sat 4:30pm-4am; Sun 4:30pm-1am. AmEx, DC, MC, V. Tribeca's very own cigar-and-champagne bar has the requisite sofas, wing-back chairs, Persian rugs and chandeliers, and it's made more bearable by the live jazz and good, caviar-heavy bar menu. Double Happiness 174 Mott St between Broome and Grand Sts (212-941-1282) Subway: B, D, Q to Grand St. Sun-Thu 5pm-2am; Fri, Sat 5pm-4am. MC, V. With its low ceilings, seductively dank vibe and multitude of hidden nooks, this former mob hangout in the middle of Chinatown oofers the perfect atmosphere for intimate conversation or loud chatter. And expect some good people watching while you're there: It attracts a crowd as hip as that at its Lower East Side sibling, Orchard Bar. Fanelli's 94 Prince St at Mercer St (212-226-9412) Subway: B, D, F, Q to Broadway-Lafayette St; N, R to Prince St; 6 to Bleecker St. Mon-Thu 10am-2am; Sat 11am-3am. AmEx, DC, Disc, MC, V. Fanelli's is the oldest and one of the best bars in Soho. It has a great wooden bar, wonderful barmen, tiled floors, framed pictures of boxers on the walls and local beers. It's decidedly unpretentious and a favorite with art-gallery owners. The food is good, but many use it as ballast for shots of Jack. Lansky Lounge 104 Norfolk St between Delancey and Rivington Sts (212-677-9489) Subway: F to Delancey St; J, M, Z to Essex St. Sun-Thu 8pm-4am; Sat 10pm-4am. No credit cards. Named after Meyer Lansky, the legendary Jewish gangster who used to eat at the adjoining Ratner's deli, Lansky has a hidden entrance and a 1930s back room feel. It also has steep drink prices and an intermittent cover charge, suggesting that the owners think this place is cooler than it actually is. And remember - don't go on Friday nights: The club is kosher and closed for the Jewish sabbath. The Greatest Bar on Earth Windows on the World, 1 World Trade Center, West St between Liberty and Vesey Sts, 107th floor (212-524-7011) Subway: C, E to World Trade Ctr; 1, 9 to Cortlandt St. Mon-Thu 4pm-midnight; Fri 4pm-2am; Sat noon-2am; Sun 11am-11pm.AmEx, DC, Disc, MC, V. No, this postmodern saloon in the sky certainly doesn't live up to the hyperbolic name, but it's nicely unearthly and on its Stratolounge Wednesday nights brings an unlikely hip crowd to the Wall Street area. Get high among the odd spiky sculptures in the sky, and the whole city below appears festive. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
