Groove Jet
323 23rd Street, between Collins Avenue & Dade Boulevard, South Beach (532 2002)
Bus C, G, H, L, S. Open 11pm-5am Tue, Thur-Sun. Admission $10 after midnight.

Last time we visited, the Smashing Pumpkins' leader Billy Corgan was sitting amid the broken glass and mirrors of the outdoor patio. Woody Harrelson was also here, as were the latest members of the Calvin Klein supermodel set. And the list goes on. Despite its relatively remote location, the Groove attracts the jet set with its techno-influenced front room, soulful back room and some intricate hiding spots for the ani-social. The premier spot for nocturnal creatures who refuse to go home gefore 6am, Groove Jet shares owners with New York's younger, wildly successful star-magnet, Jet Lounge.

Liquid

1439 Washington Avenue, at Espanola Way, South Beach (532 9154)
Bus C, H, K, W. Open 11pm-5am Mon, Fri-Sun. Admission $10.

This club kid haven is owned by Ingrid Cassares, Madonna's pal and Miami's very own nightlife diva (nepotism factor: Madonna's brother Christopher Ciccone recently designed the super-swanky downstairs lounge). It frequently attracts major celebs as well as a serious dance crowd that couldn't care less if David Geffen or Johnny Depp were in the secret VIP room. In a futile attempt to recreate a Studio 54 ambience, the velvet ropes may seem impenetrable but in fact part for just about anybody who's willing to be scrutinised for a while. On Mondays, when the enormously popular, Shaft-inspired Fat Black Pussycat clubnight is held, the entrance moves to the alley. Sunday night is gay night.

Jazid

1342 Washington Avenue, between 13th & 14th Streets, South Beach (673 9372)
Bus C, H, K, W. Open 9pm-4am Mon-Sat. Admission free.

Smoky and sultry, illuminated by flickering candelabras, Jazid is the kind of place where you'd expect to hear Sade's Smooth Operator on constant rotation. While the downstairs features live jazz, sometimes on acid, upstairs there's a DJ spinning the very best of soul and funk. A cool, mellow crowd of models, Euros and locals looking for a little reprieve from the mainstream mayhem.

MG Club
524 Ocean Drive, between Fifth & Sixth Streets, South Beach (532 8420 ext 325) Bus H, W. Open 10pm-5am Thur-Sat. Admission free.
An intimate space located in the basement of the Mare Grande Hotel (hence MG) featuring Cozy Mondays, an evening of jazz. Possibly the only spot on Ocean Drive not overcrowded with tourists.

The Living Room at the Strand
671 Washington Avenue, between Sixth & Seventh Streets, South Beach (532 2340)
Bus C, H, K, W. Open 8.30pm-5am daily Admission $10 Mon-Thur; $15 Fri, Sat.

An air of arrogance and a slightly sinister blood-red interior have placed this hipper-than-thou lounge high on the itinerary of the bar-hopping, scene-sucking in-crowd. But this Living Room isn't comfy enough for every lounge potato: beware of the so-called `door Nazis' who get their thrills from rejecting the sea of people that gathers here, admitting only six-foot model-types.

Club St Croix

3015 Grand Avenue, at Virginia Street, Coconut Grove (446 4999)
Bus 42, 48. Open 8pm-3am Mon-Thur, Sun; 7pm-5am Fri, Sat. Admission $4-$5 Thur-Sat; free Mon, Tue, Sun.

Experience the enticing rhythms of the islands at this island-themed tropical dance paradise. Wednesday is Ladies' Night, which means that women escape the $4 charge.

Bash
655 Washington Avenue, between Sixth & Seventh Streets, South Beach (538 2274)
Bus C, H, K, W. Open 10pm-5am Mon-Sat; 11pm-5am Sun. Admission $15 Fri, Sat.

A mainstay of the ever-changing South Beach club scene, Bash offers dance music indoors and world music on the outdoor patio. Weekends tend to attract the younger `causeway crowd' but during the week Bash remains true to its name and usually hosts at least one or two private parties for the fashion and entertainment communities. And did we mention that Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and bad boy actor Sean Penn are co-owners?

Amnesia
136 Collins Avenue, at First Street, South
Beach (531 5535)
Bus H, W. Open 11pm-5am Thur-Sat; 5pm-2am Sun. Admission $10 Thur-Sat; $5 Sun.

This open-air, multi-levelled, multi-chambered disco theme park offers insane one-nighters, including its famed foam parties at which buckets of bubbles are dumped onto sweaty dancers, thus conveniently masking their various lewd and lascivious activities; bacchanalian, Sunday-afternoon, gay-oriented tea dances on Sunday afternoons featuring big-name DJs; and a host of other events and parties guaranteed to provide you with a night to remember (assuming your memory's in any state to function).
