Very hip at the time of its opening a few years ago, Alphabet has become something of a victim of its own success. The drinks are good, but claustrophobes steer clear. Ever-green aristo hotel Claridge's opened a stunning new art deco bar to celebrate its centenary in 1998. Make sure you dress up and enjoy (and don't look at the bill). Trader Vic's Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, W1 (020 7493 8000 ext 420) Hyde Park Corner or Green Park tube. Open 5pm-1am Mon-Sat; 5-10.30pm Sun. Spectacularly tacky and very pricey, but if you're in the mood for cocktails and kitsch, this Hawaiian-themed basement bar can be tremendous fun.
