Bizarre Russian-style wooden hut behind Cais do Sodré station serving soft drinks, cocktails, snacks and meals. Its small esplanade is right on the river, making it a pleasant place to escape the heat and dust of central Lisbon.

Cyber Circus
Costa do Castelo 1/7, Castelo (351 21 888 1718)
Tram 12, 28. Open Open 7pm-2am Mon-Fri, 3pm-2am Sat, Sun. No credit cards.

Almost certainly destined to become one of the hippest of Lisbon's all too few internet cafés, Cyber Circus is so named because it's on the premises of a circus school. It now shares one of Lisbon's best views and most pleasant terraces with the restaurant-bar Gargalhada Geral. In the café, the computers are herded into one area, while another has tables where snacks and drinks are served, and a sunken area well-stocked with scatter cushions for more intimate conversations. One hour's surfing costs 500 escudos.

Pastelaria Bénard
Rua Garrett 104, 1200 (347 3133)
Metro Baixa-Chiado/tram 28. Open 8am-2am Mon-Sat. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V.

Coffee and cakes of a reliably high quality in one of Lisbon's longest-established tearooms. The offhand staff certainly act as though they have seen it all. Croissants, cakes by the slice and fruit tarts are among the attractions. A coffee is 80$00 at the bar, 150$00 on the terrace, where they also serve meals. Tends to catch the Café A Brasileira overspill.
