In a small alleyway, one of Barcelona's most prestigious restaurants offers comfort and service belying the shabbiness of much of the surrounding area. Menus are based on classic Catalan dishes (excellent farcellets de col, stuffed cabbage leaves), with others from various Spanish regions, such as Castilian roasts, and creations of their own like wild boar with strawberry sauce, duck with figs, or oyster soup.

The setting alone is wonderful: La Llotja, the recent creation of gourmet and food critic Josep Maria Blasi, sits beneath the lofty, perfectly rounded arches of the magnificent fourteenth-century Drassanes, home of the Museu Marítim. The excellent selection of Catalan food includes a medieval dish or two, such as roast chicken with saffron, in homage to the ancient stone edifice. At midday, there's an interesting two-course set menu. The restaurant and the equally-attractive café are entered from the garden beside the museum entrance, and are not very visible from the street.

An eccentric restaurant that's impossible to find unless you know where to look (go down a long, unmarked corridor next door to a Caixa office). There is no menu, just some of the best seafood in Barcelona, with a superb first-course buffet and cava included in the price. Fideus amb llamàntol (noodles with lobster) are particularly recommended.

A first-floor Eixample flat with a pretty interior garden houses the foremost outpost of new Basque cuisine in Barcelona. It's very discreet; a small brass plaque is the only sign of the restaurant's existence from the street. As in all Basque cooking, the basis is seafood: specialities include a melon and lobster salad, and tronc de lluç Ondarroa (hake).
